The Peter Broich is an old apple variety that has been known by this name in the Rhineland since around 1830. It then became known nationwide as the Kaiser Wilhelm apple.

The apple variety Kaiser Wilhelm was found in 1864 as a grafted tree in the garden of Haus Bürgel in the Urdenbacher Kämpe between Düsseldorf-Urdenbach and Monheim-Baumberg . The elementary school teacher and pomologist Carl Hesselmann (1830-1902) from Witzhelden ( Bergisches Land ) made a contribution to the cult of Kaiser Wilhelm I with the naming - not entirely unselfishly - the apple was presented to Kaiser Wilhelm in 1875 for a taste test, who then used the name for "This truly majestic apple" graciously approved and thanked with a framed photograph with his own signature.

Kaiser Willhelm

Due to genetic studies, the Kaiser Wilhelm apple variety was recognized as "plagiarism" a few years ago. The variety is identical to the local variety "Peter Broich", which was known from the Cologne area even before the "discovery" of Hesselmann.

The variety is harvested at the end of September and is edible from the end of October to April. It has a tasty, raspberry-like aroma. The initially firm pulp becomes tender during storage. In the past, this was rather welcomed due to the poor tooth quality.

The problem with this apple variety was and is that the tree grows high and is therefore of little commercial interest. That is why it disappeared from commercial cultivation in Germany by the 1950s at the latest . The apple has therefore only survived in private gardens and some rural orchards, although not very sensitive. It was only with the relatively new slow food movement that this apple variety came back into the focus of initially a small crowd. Well-stocked tree nurseries have offered it again for several years .
