Guy Montavon
Guy Montavon (* 1961 in Geneva ) is a Swiss opera director . He is general manager of the Erfurt Theater .
Life
His training began at the Geneva Conservatory , where he first obtained a diploma as a bassoonist . He worked as an assistant director at the Grand Théâtre de Genève , the Geneva Opera. He then studied at the Hamburg University of Music and was a participant in Götz Friedrich's class for performing arts. As assistant to Giancarlo del Monaco , Montavon worked at the opera houses in Berlin , Stuttgart , Bregenz , Barcelona , Macerata and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
From 1985 to 1988 he was assistant director and research assistant at the Theater Bremen , from 1992 to 1995 senior stage director and deputy director at the Bonn Opera and from 1996 to 2002 artistic director at the Stadttheater Gießen .

Montavon is also a member of the jury for other international singing competitions in Paris, Korea, Barcelona, Montreal, Trnava, Bilbao and Verviers and a lecturer at various universities. Since August 2002 he has been General Director of the Erfurt Theater and artistic director of the DomStufen Festival in Erfurt. Since 2005 he has been one of the ambassadors of the city of Erfurt .
Productions
One of his ideas is to initiate a world premiere cycle at the Erfurt Theater. This cycle also included the production of Philip Glass ' opera Waiting for the Barbarians , which he directed himself. This production was shown at the Amsterdam Opera in 2006 and went to Austin / Texas in 2007. In 2008 further guest appearances took place in the Barbican Hall London.
In 1993 Montavon staged Bizet's Carmen for the opening of the Finnish National Opera . He was also artistically active at the Hamburg State Opera and in Livorno, Bremerhaven, Pisa, Lyon, St.Gallen, Saarbrücken and Montpellier as well as at the opera festival in Savonlinna (Finland). Riga, Munich, Monte Carlo, Nice, Parma and Hong Kong have also been part of Montavon's areas of activity since 2009. He made his debut at the DomStufen Festival in Erfurt in 2003 with Richard Strauss ' opera Peace Day . With Carmen , Montavon caused a sensation there in 2018 because he moved the plot of the play to a Schottplatz and had a gigantic scrap car sculpture erected between the historic building ensemble of Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche (stage: Hank Irwin Kittel ).
