Guy Pe'er (born June 3, 1975 in Haifa , Israel ) is an Israeli ecologist . He works at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ and at the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) in Leipzig .

Guy Pe'er studied Life Science in Jerusalem and received his PhD from Ben Gurion University in the Negev . Today he works at the UFZ and the iDiv in Leipzig, in the Department of Ecosystem Services , which is associated with both institutions.

In his research, he tries to combine different levels and areas of ecology : he works in animal behavior research, on population dynamics , on structures and patterns of biodiversity. He combines model approaches with practical field experiments and searches for conclusions for nature conservation measures. He works with different groups of animals, especially butterflies and rams, but also with mammals (e.g. the lynx), birds and various plants.

Since about 2010, he deals increasingly with the European Union - agricultural policy , especially with environmental issues as part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) . As first author, he published two articles on this topic in the renowned journal Science (2014 and 2019). In 2017, he directed a fitness check report on the GAP that was commissioned by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) and BirdLife International . In 2020 he initiated a call to the European Commission for a sustainability-oriented reform of the CAP.

He developed the FunCon program , which can be used to model the effects of habitat fragmentation .
