Guy Tuneh

Guy David Tuneh (born April 11, 1977 in Tel-Aviv ) is an Israeli double bass soloist and chamber musician . The main focus of his work is to play compositions on the double bass that were not written for this instrument.

Life

Education

Guy Tuneh was a student of Michael Klinghoffer at the S. Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin in the class of Barbara Sanderling . He completed his soloist diploma with Wolfgang Güttler at the University of Music in Basel . He also took part in master classes by Yoan Goiilav , Gary Karr and Miloslav Gajdoš .

Career as a musician

Guy Tuneh was the solo bassist of the Berlin Chamber Opera and the "Echo Ensemble" of the Berlin State Opera and in the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra , the winner of the Echo Klassik in 2007, under Daniel Barenboim . These appearances, which also included a chamber music collaboration with Daniel Barenboim, were recorded for ORF (Austrian Radio and Television) at the Salzburg Festival .

As an orchestral musician, Tuneh played at the Theater Erfurt , with the Radiophilharmonie des NDR Hannover and with the Solistes Européen Luxembourg . He played under conductors such as Kurt Sanderling , Zubin Mehta , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Simon Rattle and Pierre Boulez . As the winner of the SWR Villa Musica grant in Rhineland-Palatinate , Tuneh received great approval as a chamber musician and soloist and made various recordings with SWR (Südwestrundfunk).

He worked with contemporary composers such as Heinz Holliger , Jörg Widmann , Carlo Domeniconi and Helmut Lachenmann . From 2007 to 2012 Guy D. Tuneh was “First Principal Bassist” of the Paris ensemble Les Dissonances under the direction of David Grimal.

In 2009 Guy Tuneh performed at the International Lake Constance Festival .

Guy David Tuneh is active as a soloist and chamber musician. As a chamber musician, he has performed with Vesselina Kasarova , Natalia Gutman , Heinz Holliger, the Ensemble Modern , Guy Braunstein, Rainer Kussmaul , David Grimal, Quirine Viersen, Catalin Ilea, the Berlin Chamber Orchestra, the Chamber Soloists of the Deutsche Oper and other renowned musicians. In addition to his activities as a soloist and chamber musician, he was the first solo bassist of the Arcos Orchestra Berlin chamber orchestra.

Guy Tuneh challenges the traditional role of a bassist to push the boundaries of bass playing. He was the first bass player, in addition to traditional bass literature, to produce an unprocessed version of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations (2007), Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto (2008), the Fantasia for Cello by Heitor Villa-Lobos (2011), and Ludwig van Beethoven's violin - Romance in G major (2012) and Niccolò Paganini's Caprice No. 9 (2012), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Rondo in C major for violin (2013), Gustav Mahler's songs of a traveling journeyman (2014), Mozart's Sonata in G major for violin (2014) performed in concert in order to reach a higher technical and artistic level. He also presented Ludwig van Beethoven's violin romance in F major (2010) and violin romance in G major (2011) and Niccolo Paganini's Cantabile for violin (2011).

In 2014, live recordings by Guy David Tuneh were released on the Synchron Arts GmbH label. The recordings include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Sonata in G major (KV 301 as a world premiere on the double bass) and two versions of Paganini's Cantabile. The guitar version also contains an introduction composed by Tuneh.
