Gwyn Jones (writer)

Gwyn Jones (born May 24, 1907 in Blackwood , Monmouthshire , † December 6, 1999 in Aberystwyth ) was a Welsh writer.

Life

Jones was born the son of a midwife and a miner . He studied at University College in Cardiff and graduated with a Master of Arts . From 1929 he worked as a teacher, first in Wigan then in Manchester . In 1935 he returned to Wales and worked as a lecturer in Cardiff at University College. In 1939 he founded The Welsh Review . The journal he edited appeared in 1939 and 1944 to 1948. From 1940 to 1964 he was professor of English at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth . From 1964 to 1975 he was an English professor at University College Cardiff.

He worked as an editor and critic, wrote novels, short stories, novellas, historical works, essays and children's books. He has also translated works from Icelandic and Welsh .

Awards

The Icelandic President Ásgeir Ásgeirsson appointed him Knight of the Order of the Falcons for his Viking research in 1963 . On the occasion of his 80th birthday he was appointed commander of the order. In addition, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
