Ups and Downs is a 1915 German silent film drama starring Erna Morena as a woman between two men.

action

The wife of a scholar, a professor, is indeed idolized by the latter, but all his attention is devoted entirely to his books and research activities. Therefore, the young and fun-loving woman feels neglected. In order to relax, the couple decides to go on a recreational trip to the high Alps. One day the wife met a young, fresh mountain tourist there who had come home from a tour and picked flowers. In his high spirits he distributes the flowers to the tourist ladies and also throws some into the lap of the neglected wife. The professor is very angry about this behavior, which he considers inappropriate, and confronts the young man. The latter apologizes for his behavior and explains that this can be explained by the (him) blissful feeling of the high-altitude intoxication encountered here. They make up quickly and invite the stranger to the couple's table.

The following evening, the tourist and the neglected wife are already walking together in the great outdoors. Your companion then invites you to enjoy the said blissful high-altitude rush with him and to accompany him on a mountain tour the following day. Intoxicated by his stories, she says yes, while her professorial husband is reluctant to give his consent. When he reached the top of the glacier, the young do-it-all was once again overwhelmed by the rush of heights, and he began to give his married companion a stormy hug. Although she is actually not averse, the scholar's wife indignantly rejects him as a faithful wife. The two climb towards the summit when a serious mishap happens: both slip and fall into the depths. They lie side by side, badly injured, and only death seems to be waiting for them. Her companion has lost consciousness and so, in the face of imminent death, she dares to give him one last kiss.

In the meantime, her husband is beginning to worry about his wife's long absence and also goes on a climbing tour to the summit heights. He seeks and searches, but cannot find his wife. A terrible mishap happens to him too. The professorial husband slips and also falls into the depths. He lies dead on the ground with his limbs shattered. Meanwhile, a professional rescue expedition has set out to find and rescue the missing people. In fact, the wife and her tourist guide are found alive. Recovered again, the mentally unfaithful discovers in her deceased husband's desk at home his moving confessions of love for her. Moved by so much affection, she no longer wants to have anything to do with her near-lover and decides to devote the rest of her life to the memory of her deceased husband.

Production notes

Ups and downs was probably made in the second half of 1915. The studio recordings were made in the Messter-Film-Atelier at Blücherstraße 32 in Berlin, the production team traveled to the Upper Bavarian high mountains for the outdoor photos. The censorship dates and the premiere date (presumably 1916) are not known. In Austria-Hungary, the mountain drama discussed in December 1915 ran under the title Höhenrausch .

criticism

“The new film in the Erna Morena series“ Höhenrausch ”can probably be counted among the most beautiful and best of all films in this series, which is valuable in every direction. Erna Morena works through her individuality, as well as through her personal charm and her understanding game. "
