Höllental (Lower Silesia)

In Hell Valley

The Höllental ( Piekielna Dolina in Polish ) is a narrow, romantic section of the Reinerzer Weistritz ( Bystrzyca Dusznicka ) valley in the western part of the former County of Glatz in today's Powiat Kłodzki within the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland.

Location and shape

In the Höllentalbahn Reinerz Weistritz breaks through in a narrow valley from the Upper Cretaceous derived sandstone layers and forms a section of the boundary between the Habelschwerdter and the Heuscheuergebirge .

The Höllental lies between the towns of Szczytna ( Rückers ) and Polanica-Zdrój ( Bad Altheide ) and is about three kilometers long with several turns. In this area, only the river, a road and a railway line run on the narrow valley floor, which intersect several times. The wooded slopes of the valley, partly covered with sandstone blocks, are steep and reach heights of up to 200 m.

Plants such as net leaves , daphne , Turk's union and downy birch grow in the valley . It is therefore part of the Europe-wide network of protected areas Natura 2000 .

history

Viaduct in Höllental (around 1910)

The trade route from Prague via Glatz to Breslau has always led through the Hell Valley. The special dangers on this route, not least due to robberies, could have contributed to the name of the valley.

In 1890 the Prussian State Railroad completed the first section of the Glatz – Bad Kudowa line . This leads through the Höllental, where special structures, such as viaducts, were necessary due to the landscape. On December 15, 1890, the first train drove to Rückers.

With the establishment of the Reich road network in 1934, the road from Glatz to Bad Kudowa through the Höllental was numbered 150 . On a map from 1974, the road connection from Polanica-Zdrój to Szczytna still runs through Hell Valley. In the following years, a route north of the Höllental was expanded for the connection now known as Landesstraße 8 . Since then, the road through the Höllental has only had regional significance.
