Georgsmarienhütte

The Hüggelbahn was a railway line on which ores were transported from Hüggel to the plant of the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein in Georgsmarienhütte . It was put into operation in stages from 1864–1866. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1879. Freight traffic was shut down slowly from 1970 to 1987. Only the route still bears witness to the former Hüggelbahn.

With the purchase of the pits on the hill, a railway connection to Georgsmarienhütte became necessary in order to reduce the transport costs for the transported ore and the limestone . Since 1858, the ore has been driven to the hut on horse-drawn vehicles. Every day 400 teams came to bring the ore.

The first plans in 1858 and 1860 for the Hüggelbahn were rejected. The plans were only approved when the Georgs-Marien-Bergwerks- und Hüttenverein had agreed to set up passenger traffic. The ore was transported to the loading points via an extensive narrow-gauge network. With the commissioning of the Georgsmarienhütte – Hasbergen railway line , the section now belonged to this line. At Patkenhof station - formerly Holzhausen  - the Hüggelbahn track ran parallel to the Augustaschacht , where it connected the individual pits in the Hüggel. A cable car built in 1928 was used until 1937 to transport limestone from the “Silbersee” quarry to the Hüggelbahn.

After iron ore mining and lime extraction directly on the Hüggel ceased in the early 1930s, the 6.34-kilometer-long Kalk cable car from the Holperdorp ( Lienen ) limestone quarry on the Lienener Berg in the Teutoburg Forest via the unloading station near the Augustaschachtes with the Hüggelbahn gone. In Altenhagen -Großheide there was still an intermediate station from which dolomite was transported from a quarry for use in the iron and steel works to the unloading station. With the shutdown of the cable car in 1967, the creeping end of the Hüggelbahn came from 1970. Only a few slag trains brought the blast furnace slag into the hill until the tracks were dismantled. Today there is a hiking trail on the route.
