history

The first known documentary mention comes from the year 1330. At that time Adolf von Holdinghausen, one of the castle men on the Waldenburg near Attendorn, was enfeoffed with the main courtyard Hünsborn.

Associated with this was the jurisdiction in matters of the court such as the allocation of the side courtyards, duties to be paid, border disputes, mortgage lending or seizures. The owner of the Waldenburg and feudal lord over Hünsborn was the Archbishop of Cologne. This main courtyard with the dependent farms later belonged to the Wenden parish. When the church was built in Wenden around 1750, the Hünsborner Hof was sold for 1200 Reichstaler to the then tenant Anton Koch and his wife Maria, née. Schumacher.

Until the reorganization of the ownership structure in the Napoleonic Wars shortly after 1800, the Sauerland belonged to the Electorate of Cologne . Since 1816 Hünsborn belonged to Prussia .

In the Thirty Years War Hünsborn counted seven farms. According to a tax register, thirty-five people lived in Hünsborn in 1690. Around 1900 lived here around 600 people, now the population is around 3200.

In 1987 Hünsborn won the gold medal at the state level in the competition Our village should be more beautiful .

dialect

In Hünsborn, "Wendsch Platt " is spoken in dialect. The spread of this dialect is limited to the area of the municipality of Wenden.

Coat of arms

Berthold Schneider designed an unofficial coat of arms for the village. In the upper part of the coat of arms three crowns are depicted, which symbolize the three wise men. The lower part of the coat of arms depicts the Catholic parish church with the onion dome, the town's landmark.

The depiction of the Magi goes back to the following anecdote, which is told in Hünsborn: Once three men from Hünsborn were in Cologne. On the Memorial Day of the Magi, they went to church in the cathedral, but came too late. When the pastor asked in his sermon about the wise astrologers where these three men came from, they felt addressed, they ducked a little, and finally answered: “Mie kummen van Hünschpen un shimmy with Ljappeln!” (“We are coming from Hünsborn and trade with spoons ”).

Worth seeing

Catholic parish church

Main article: St. Kunibertus

It is not entirely clear when there was a chapel in Hünsborn. The Olper baptismal register from that time contains a note that the Cologne auxiliary bishop and vicar general Johann Anathan consecrated an altar, a bell and a cemetery in Hünsborn on June 4, 1669. This document does not rule out that there was already a prayer room in Hünsborn.

From 1907 Hünsborn had its own pastor; In 1949 the community was elevated to a parish.

The St. Kunibertus parish church was built and expanded in several stages from 1920 to 1955 on the square where a chapel had stood for centuries. The result was a uniform sacred building, modeled on the baroque style, with light-colored exterior plaster and a slated gable roof. The onion hood of the western ridge turret and also the sphere of the great tower with the lantern are made of copper sheets. Most of the interior is from the 1940s and 1950s.

In the church, the large triumphal cross above the altar is worth seeing. It dates from around 1500. Due to its dimensions, it is 2.25 m × 2.15 m in size, it can be assumed that it used to hang in a larger church. Where, however, is not clear.

In the left aisle hangs a picture from 1687 at the twelfth station of the cross. Here, too, it is not clear how this got into the Hünsborn church.

There is also a pieta that dates from around 1750 and was initially in the castle chapel in Junkernhees .

Koch's forge

In addition to the parish church, the old smithy has also been included in the list of architectural monuments in the municipality of Wenden.

Weir systems

Historically, Hünsborn was a border town. The border of the electorate of Cologne was in the forest east of Hünsborn.

Ramps and ditches are still visible, well-kept and signposted in the forest today by the local history association from the neighboring village of Oberholzklau.

Facilities

school

School lessons were held as early as 1668. In a letter from the church commissioner Johannes Schommartz in Meschede, the people of Hünsborn were admonished to send their children to the vicar in Wenden for class. In 1725, a school with a teacher's apartment was built in Hünsborn near the church (later Knott's house). Around 1878 they moved into a two-class building on Hauptstrasse (today the parish hall). At that time the schoolyard was Wilmes' place. In 1946 the four-class schoolhouse on Kardinal-Jäger-Straße was inaugurated, which is now used as the Kindergarten Unterm Regenbogen . It was not finished during the war and was finally hit by grenades. The current primary school building dates from 1969.

Kindergartens

There are two kindergartens in Hünsborn. The older of them, the Noah's Ark kindergarten is sponsored by the Catholic Church, and the Unterm Regenbogen kindergarten is independently sponsored.

Social life, clubs

From the previous three restaurants, one, namely the Gasthof Zu den Dreikönigen, has remained. The restaurant is a club and rehearsal room for several clubs.

The largest clubs are the Rot-Weiß Hünsborn sports club , the St. Kunibertus Schützenbruderschaft , the volunteer fire brigade, the Hope music association and the parish-Cecilia choir, the Sangeslust men's choir , the Twelve Robber Quartet and the First Ladies women's choir .

There is also the sports fishing club minnow , the fruit and horticultural club, tennis club, badminton club and a few others. In the south of the village is the area of the airfield community . There three clubs operate gliding and motorsport flight.
