The H. & J. Brüggen KG is a medium-sized enterprises of food industry with headquarters in Luebeck , the cereal to breakfast cereals processed and other products.

history

The company emerged from a buckwheat processing mill that Heinrich and Johannes Brüggen founded in Neumünster in 1868 . In 1886 the company moved to Lübeck, where the first steam mill for oats was put into operation in 1894 . The mill operation was logistically favored by the opening of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal . The older mills and silos that characterize the harbor in this area were built by 1923. The silo from 1923 holds 30,000 quintals. As early as 1959, a fully automatic packaging system for oat flakes was put into operation, which was the first of its kind in Germany at the time.

After classic mill products had dominated the range for a long time, the production of cornflakes was started in Germany for the first time in 1965 . The production of muesli began in 1978, and in 1985 the range was expanded to include muesli bars .

The company's headquarters are still in a complex on Hafenstrasse in Lübeck with a direct connection to the port of Lübeck. A Plant II for cereal production in 1989 was at the Lübeck Glashüttenweg, further enhancements were the commissioning of a logistics center with high-bay warehouse in Luebeck and the establishment of a new cereal production building with fully automatic supply of raw materials, also in Luebeck. In 2009 Brüggen acquired the southern part of the Konstinkai from the Lübecker Hafengesellschaft (LHG) in order to build a new plant with a production hall here by 2012.

In 1991 a subsidiary in Poland ( Brüggen Polska ) was founded and a cereal factory was built in Wilga near Warsaw . In autumn 2008 a new cereal factory and logistics center for south-western Europe was put into operation in Thiers , France .

The H. & J. Brüggen KG is still family-owned; Personally liable partners are Hanno Brüggen, Jochen Brüggen and Johannes Brüggen.

The turnover in 2005 was 116 million euros. In 2008 sales were 180 million euros. In 2009, the company employed more than 920 people in Germany and abroad, 240 of them in Poland, 140 in France and 540 at the headquarters in Lübeck.

In January 2013, the Lübecker Nachrichten reported that the muesli manufacturer was being threatened more and more by the booming biofuel production. Two thirds of the company's products are dependent on the oat supply, which is becoming increasingly scarce due to the high demand for agrofuels.

Divisions

Brüggen supplies the food industry with raw cereals and semi-finished products such as muesli mixes for yoghurt , which makes up around 25 percent of sales.

According to its own statement, the company is the market leader in the volume sales of oat flakes in Germany.

Products such as corn flakes and other cereals, muesli and muesli bars are the house brand Bruggen , the secondary brands Holstenmühle and Joe's Farm and under a variety of brands sold. Around 60 percent of annual sales come from business with private labels such as Knusperone and Gletscherkrone products for Aldi and some products from the umbrella brands Crownfield , Master Crumble and Biotrend for Lidl .
