Harold Vincent Poor (* 1951 in Columbus , Georgia ) is an American electrical engineer who primarily deals with wireless transmission methods. He teaches and researches at Princeton University .

Career

Vincent Poor was born in Columbus and studied at Auburn University in Alabama , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1972 and his master's degree in electrical engineering in 1974 . He then moved to Princeton University , where he received a Master of Arts in the same subject in 1976 and finally a Ph.D. in 1977. received his doctorate . As a postdoc he took in 1977 worked as a research assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he an ordinary seven years later Professor of Electrical Engineering and Technical computer science (Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering) was appointed. Sergio Verdú was one of his doctoral students there .

Poor stayed in Illinois until 1990 when he returned to Princeton University as a professor of electrical engineering. Poor has held this position to this day (since 2005 under the name Michael Henry Strater University Professor of Electrical Engineering ). He is also a member of the management of the Princeton Environmental Institute and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment , each of which deals with the interfaces between energy and electrical engineering and environmental protection . In addition, Poor has been visiting professor at Imperial College London since 2004 .

Scientific work

Poor is regarded as one of the leading engineers in the field of wireless transmission methods and signal processing , so his book "An Introduction to Signal Detection and Estimation" is a reference in this subject. Another focus of his work is energy technology , where he deals with intelligent power grids and energy harvesting , among other things . He also deals with information theory and information security .

To date, Poor has been involved in the publication of over 50 books and over 500 professional articles and in the publication of more than 25 professional journals. He has also filed 15 patents in the USA .

Honors

Poor has been elected to a variety of scientific professional and honorary societies, including the IEEE (1987), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1991), the National Academy of Engineering (2001), the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (2001), the Optical Society of America (2001), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2005), the Royal Academy of Engineering (2009), the National Academy of Sciences (2011), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (2012), the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2013), the Academia Europaea (2013), the Royal Society (2014) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (2015). He was also awarded the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal of 2017.

Poor has also received honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh (2011), Aalborg University (2012), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2012), Aalto University (2014) and Syracuse University (2017).
