history

Heinrich Wilke GmbH was founded in 1929 by Heinrich Wilke, who abbreviated the company with the first letters of his name: HEWI. From 1934 the first products were made from the plastic Bakelite . At that time, HEWI was one of the first plastics processing companies in Germany. In 1954 the production of door protectors and door handles began, from 1957 from the then new material polyamide .

Together with architects, Rudolf Wilke, the son of the company founder, developed the door handle 111 made of polyamide in 1969 , with which the company gained international fame. Based on this design , a complete system with cloakrooms, handrails and railings was created, the System 111 , which became a modern classic and a bestseller and mainstay of the company.

HEWI has been producing products for barrier-free living since 1979 . In 1996 the company held the first HEWI forum Barrier Free Living - Life without exclusion in Bad Arolsen, followed in 1998 by the held also in Bad Arolsen Forum HEWI forum Accessible life - approaches and visions for a togetherness . Extensive documentation was published on the congresses. From 2003 onwards, HEWI produced equipment specifically for institutional care in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and retirement homes.

The company has also been a supplier to the automotive industry since 2001 .
