The HMM Megamax class is a series of container ships operated by the Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM). The twelve ships on order have been delivered since April 2020 and are among the largest container ships in the world .

history

The HMM Oslo in front of Geojedo

The twelve-unit Megamax series was commissioned on September 28, 2018 from the South Korean shipbuilders Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) together with a series of smaller ULCS container ships to be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries . The contract was financially supported by the state-owned Korea Ocean Business Corporation. The ships are to be used between Europe and East Asia as part of the liner conference The Alliance , which HMM will join as a full member in April 2020. So far, HMM used Panamax ships as a strategic partner of the 2M alliance .

technology

Within the ULCS ships, the ships belong to the group of Megamax-24 container ships. Like the units of the MSC Megamax-24 and CMA CGM Megamax-24 , they are around 400 meters long and have 24 parking bays in length. The Megamax ships are about two and a half meters wider than the previously largest ULCS, so that they can stow an additional 24th row of containers transversely . According to the design, the containers can be stowed in up to twelve layers in the holds and on deck - a total of 24 layers. With a 13th layer on deck, however, the slot capacity was subsequently increased again to ultimately come to a nominal almost 24,000 TEU.

The deckhouse is arranged like most ULCS series relatively far forward, which an improved line of sight makes and thus a higher front deck loading. The bunker tanks are arranged below the superstructure; they meet the relevant MARPOL regulations. The holds of the ships are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The maximum container capacity was initially given as around 23,000 TEU; however, the units are built with around 24,000 TEU. There are connections for 2200 integral refrigerated containers .

The ships are powered by a two - stroke diesel engine that acts on a fixed propeller . The energy supply on board is ensured by an auxiliary diesel. The ships are designed for slow steaming .
