Haa of sand
The Haa of Sand is a former manor house on the Scottish Shetland island of Mainland . In 1971 the Haa of Sand was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A. It is very similar to the Old Haa of Scalloway .
history
The Haa of Sand was built in 1754 as a summer residence for Andrew Mitchell, 2nd Baronet . He also obtained permission from the Earl of Morton to remove lintels, lintels and ornate corner stones from Scalloway Castle to build his home . Little is known about the further history of the Haas. A fire broke out there in December 2011. Today the Haa of Sand, along with the North Haa and Belmont House, is one of the best-preserved historically valuable buildings from the 18th century in the Shetlands.
description
The three-story Georgian-style building is isolated in a rural area of Mainland, about 250 meters from Sand Voe Bay . Scalloway and the island's capital Lerwick are nine and eight miles to the southeast, respectively. The masonry is made from granite that was quarried on Hildasay Island . The facades are plastered in the traditional way with Harl . The windows are framed by simple bezels made of sandstone , which was also used for the corner stones on the building edges. The east-facing front is symmetrical with five window axes. The entrance area is in the middle of the building and has a decorated architrave . The coat of arms is embedded above it. Flat wings with pent roofs extend on both sides . A symmetrical structure was dispensed with on the opposite west facade. There are windows of different sizes to be found there at irregular intervals. A modern door has also been added to the right. To the east, another garden borders the Haa of Sand, which is enclosed by a stone wall. The access gates are made from material extracted from Scalloway Castle. In autumn 2014, the building was extensively renovated.
