Kalemie (until 1966 Albertville ) is a town on the west bank of Lake Tanganyika , on the outflow of the Lukuga , in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It is the capital of Tanganyika Province and has a population of 147,065 (as of January 1, 2005), compared with 73,528 in 1984 according to the census.
The city has a port from which ships run to Tanzania , but also to the port of Kalundu in the northern city of Uvira . This port and its textile and cement industry make it the economic center of the region.
Located in the city, the port of Kalémie ( French Port de Kalémie ) is operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo , has a cain system with a total length of 385 meters and a maximum water depth of 5.35 meters. There are five derricks on the quay . There is free and covered storage space in the port as well as a dry dock . The traffic of goods with the port of Kigoma in Tanzania mainly comprises cement , building materials , flour , salt , sugar and fuel . The port area ( 5 ° 56 ′ 49 ″ S , 29 ° 12 ′ 6 ″ E ) is both a border crossing and a customs clearance point .
The city is the end point of the SNCC railway line Kamina - Kabalo -Kalemie. The tracks lead to the port. The state University of Kalemie (UNIKAL) is located in the city.
history
Kalemie was founded in 1892 as a Belgian military post.
On December 5, 2005, the earthquake on Lake Tanganyika shook the city, the epicenter of which was about 55 kilometers away. Several houses collapsed and at least one was killed.
Kalemie maintains a partnership with the German city of Steinheim for decades .
