The Lahnstein port consists of two parts. At the mouth of the Lahn on the right bank of the Rhine between Rhine kilometers 584.70 and 585.30 is the port basin and the river port is at kilometers 587.064 and 587.663 . The port of Lahnstein is part of the Rhineland-Palatinate port operations in Ludwigshafen .

Already in the early Middle Ages was in Lahnstein an envelope terrain , was transferred to the barges between Lahn and Rhine ships. The existence of a customs office was first mentioned in writing in 1298. In 1860 the first harbor basin separated from the Rhine stream was built. About 1864 a rail link was to the Lahn Valley Railway created, whereby the envelope of goods from the hinterland, such as the famous Lahnmarmor , was made possible. The port entrance was moved from the Rhine side to the Lahn side in 1939, the port basin in its current form was built between 1962 and 1970. Originally, two pull-out tracks opened up the port facility. The tracks have now been dismantled, but their former course east of the harbor basin is still clearly visible.

Harbor basin

The harbor basin has a quay length of 750 m. The port has a gantry crane with 8/15 tonnes and a loading bridge with 8/13 tonnes lifting capacity for cargo handling . The entire port area has an area of ​​12.1  hectares . 10,000 m² of open space and 12,000 m² of indoor storage are available as storage space. Another 20,000 m² are industrial space. The port handling is operated by Rhenus AG & Co. KG . The main goods handled are domestic building materials such as basalt and basalt lava as well as granite , porphyry , sandstone and quartzite . Wood briquettes and pellets are also loaded.

River port

The river port has a quay length of 700 m and an area of ​​0.7 ha. Two cranes with 8/10 tonnes of lifting capacity and two mineral oil loading facilities are available as handling facilities. A grain store for 30,000 tons, a fertilizer store for 12,000 tons and a general cargo store for 5,000 tons are available as storage areas. The main storage building is the Löhnberger Mühle. The now listed former grain mill was built in 1890 as the largest steam mill in Germany at that time . The tank farm has a capacity of 20,000 m³. The transshipment operators are Beiselen Lagerei- und Umschlags GmbH for dry cargo and TanQuid Deukalon Tanklager GmbH & C0 for mineral oil products . KG. In 2014, the total throughput was 141,969 tons.

Both parts of the port can be reached via the federal highway 42 , the B 260 and the B 327 . The Rheintalbahn runs directly past the port facilities, but does not (no longer) provide direct access to the quays.
