Karim Haggui [ karjim ħaqji ] ( Arabic كريم حقي, DMG Karīm Ḥaqqī ; * January 20, 1984 in Kasserine ) is a former German - Tunisian soccer player who was most recently under contract with FC St. Gallen .
Career
societies
Karim Haggui began playing football at the age of ten in the youth of the "Avenir sportif de Kasserine". In 1998 he was accepted into the youth department of the "Etoile sportive du Sahel (ESS)", the football club of the city of Sousse , and coached by old stars of Tunisian football, including Lofti Hsoumi. He started out as a right back with an attacking focus. In 2002, at the age of 18, he made his debut in the Tunisian championship when the ESS played against "Olympique de Béja" (1-0 win for the ESS).
At the age of 21 he went to France, where he was signed to Racing Strasbourg . He quickly made a name for himself as a sturdy right full-back with a strong header in set pieces, playing 20 league games after recovering from an ankle injury. In the second season he played following a league cup win in the UEFA Cup . In the season in which he played with Strasbourg in the UEFA Cup, Haggui rose with the Alsatians from the first division.
For the 2006/07 season Haggui moved to Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a fee of 2.5 million euros . Here he played three seasons, including a. a. in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup (in the final defeat he sat on the bench) and in 20 games (two goals) of the UEFA Cup.
In June 2009, Haggui moved to Hannover 96 as a central defender and turned down offers from English and Spanish clubs. After the suicide of team captain Robert Enke in November 2009, a negative series began that put the club in acute danger of relegation. The game at Borussia Mönchengladbach , in which Haggui scored two of three Hanoverian own goals, can be seen as a symbol of this . He was only the sixth Bundesliga player to have suffered such a double. Shortly before the end of the season, 96 caught up again and secured relegation on the last matchday.
In the following summer break, Haggui received an offer from his former trainer at Racing Strasbourg, Antoine Kombouaré, to move to Paris Saint-Germain. However, he stayed at Hannover 96 and contributed to the following most successful seasons in the club's history. During the 2010/11 season he extended his contract by three years until June 2014. At the end of the 2010/11 Bundesliga season, Haggui reached fourth place with Hannover 96 with 60 points. In the playoff round of the Europa League , 96 prevailed against Sevilla FC . The opponents in the group stage were Standard Liège , FC Copenhagen and Worskla Poltava . In the following intermediate round Hannover 96 prevailed against Club Bruges . After winning the last sixteen against Standard Liège, Hanover was eliminated from the competition in the quarter-finals against Atlético Madrid .
In the 2011/12 Bundesliga season, Haggui played 27 games (including all 17 of the first half of the season) and scored three goals. At the end of the season, 96 was in seventh place with 48 points. This entitles them to participate in the third qualifying round for the 2012/13 Europa League. Here 96 prevailed in both games against St. Patrick's Athletic , Haggui scored one goal.
On September 2, 2013, Haggui moved to VfB Stuttgart .
For the 2015/16 season he joined Fortuna Düsseldorf .
On August 15, 2016, he moved to FC St. Gallen on a two-year contract free of charge . After his contract was not renewed due to persistent adductor problems, Haggui left St. Gallen in the summer of 2018. He then announced the following year that he had finally ended his career.
National team
Roger Lemerre appointed Haggui to the national team for the first time in August 2003 . At the Africa Cup of 2004 in Tunisia , he won the trophy with the “Aigles de Carthage” in the final against Morocco (2-0). As the youngest Tunisian winner of the Africa Cup, he qualified his team for the quarter-finals against Nigeria with the decisive goal on penalties .
A few months later he took part in the Athens Olympic Games. After seven games with the national team and two goals in qualifying matches, Haggui only played three games alongside Radhi Jaidi at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, as the Tunisian national team was eliminated in the group stage. In 2009 he became the captain of the national team. At the Africa Cup of 2012 in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea , the quarter-finals were reached, in which Tunisia lost to Ghana .
In April 2012, Haggui took a break from the national team to give younger players the chance to develop better within the team.
