The Hahnenkammsee , also known as Steinbruchsee or Hemsbachsee , is a lake that was created in 2008 in the Spessart near Mömbris in the Aschaffenburg district in Bavaria .
geography
The approximately one hectare large Hahnenkammsee lies west of the town of Brücken at about 250 m above sea level. NHN on the northern Hahnenkamm ridge called the Hohe Mark . The mountain lake covers the bottom of the former quarry, which has been filling with rainwater since 2008. Since then, entering the site has been prohibited.
history
Quarry
In the 1970s, a quartzite quarry was set up by the Central German hard stone industry on the southeastern slope of the Hohe Mark for the extraction of road gravel and road construction material and later expanded to the northeast. Mica slate and quartzite slate from the Geiselbach Formation were mined . Here were also found minerals such as Granatporphyroblasten .
The original access road over which the extracted rock was removed led south to a turning area and further through the village of Brücken. After cracks appeared in buildings in the town due to heavy goods traffic , the first initiative was founded in 1985; as a result, a second asphalt road was built, over which the material could be transported past bridges to the north.
After the ballast became increasingly inferior, the operator stopped regular dismantling in 2003. Since 2005 it has only broken irregularly, not at all since 2007. After the silos , conveyor belts and crushers were dismantled , the pumps were switched off and the lowest level of the northern part of the quarry was filled with rainwater. The Hahnenkammsee was created.
Hahnenkammsee
The council of the market Mömbris decided in 2011, the Hahnenkammsee complete with earth excavation to fill, while a part of the site as Geotop obtain. After the backfilling had already started, a municipal vote was set in 2012, in which the citizens of the municipality could decide for or against the preservation of the lake. The majority voted for the continued existence of the Hahnenkammsee. Because of the already started backfilling in the south-western part of the lake, clay saturated with water penetrated into the fissure system at the bottom of the lake. Since then, the rainwater that got into the lake can no longer seep away. The lake level will therefore continue to rise until it reaches the lowest point on the edge of the quarry, from where the overflowing water will then flow northeast over the desert stream to the Kahl .
In summer 2019, a viewing platform with a shelter and wooden loungers was built on the northern edge of the Hahnenkammsee.
fauna
Since 2009, the rock faces at the Hahnenkammsee have been a breeding ground for a pair of uhups . Some amphibian species spawn in the swamp-like areas of the mountain lake.
