Hailemariyam Amare first competed in the Ethiopian U20 championships over 3000 meters in 2012. He finished fifth. The following year he started in the lower age group at the U18 African Championships in Nigeria. He won the bronze medal in 5: 45.50 minutes. In spring 2014, he competed over the same distance at the African Youth Games in Botswana. Compared to last year, he ran almost seven seconds faster over 2000 meters and thus won the gold medal. A few months later he also took part in the U20 World Championships in the USA. In the final, he ran a time of 8: 42.00 minutes over a 3000 meter obstacle, which put him in fifth place. In March 2015 Amare started at the U20 African Championships in his home country. He stayed in the final with a time over 9 minutes, with which he still won the bronze medal. In June he improved his time to 8: 25.10 minutes and thus also qualified for the World Championships in Beijing. In his first world championship race, he moved directly into the final, in which he finished twelfth, where he was only slightly behind his personal best. Only a month later he managed to improve to 8: 24.19 min at the Africa Games , which earned him the bronze medal.
In May 2016 Amare was able to improve his best time in Beijing again and qualified for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. After he did not make it into the regions of his best time in the run-up to the games, he was eliminated as eighth of his preliminary run in Rio. Overall, he finished 28th. In 2017 he was able to build on his best times again and even improved them to 8: 13.39 min on Ostrava in June. In the following years he did not come close to his personal best. In 2018, after missing the World Championships in London, he entered the African Championships . He ran 8: 38.46 min in the final and was sixth.
