With Halterner Berge , the mountain ranges of Hohe Mark (with Rekener Kuppen) north of the Ruhr area (up to 145.9  m above sea  level ) become northwest, Borkenberge (up to 133.3  m ) east and Haard (up to 156.9  m ) south of the city Haltern am See . They are located in the North Rhine-Westphalian districts of Borken , Coesfeld and Recklinghausen and are around 283 km² in size, including the valleys that separate their mountain ranges.

Their three mountain ranges represent the only submontane sub- natural areas of the main unit Westmünsterland , the southeast of which they occupy. Immediately to the east is the south-west of the Kernmünsterland , also part of the main unit group Westphalian Bay .

The highest elevation of the Haltern Mountains is the Stimberg ( 156.9  m ) in the Haard. The three mountain ranges are separated by the valleys of the flowing waters of the Lippe (northern boundary of the Haard to the other two mountain ranges) and the Halterner Mühlenbach and Stever estuary (eastern boundary of the Hohen Mark to the Borkenberge) with the Haltern reservoir .

The Haltern Mountains are located in the south-east of the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland Nature Park .
