Hampton Roads
Hampton Roads (literally "Hampton- Reede ") refers to both the waterway in the US state of Virginia , where the rivers James River , Nansemond River and Elizabeth River in Chesapeake Bay lead, and the metropolitan area to the waterway around.
It is a major transportation hub for the cities of Norfolk , Portsmouth and Newport News . It is also an important waterway for the United States Navy , running from the Atlantic Ocean to the naval base and shipyard in Norfolk and the Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard .
Hampton Roads region
The metropolitan area in southeast Virginia that is around this waterway is also known as Hampton Roads . It includes the cities of Virginia Beach , Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk to the south and Newport News , Hampton , Williamsburg, and Poquoson to the north.
The Hampton Roads area is now home to around 1.6 million people. It is the largest metropolitan area between Washington, DC and Atlanta .
This region is also of historical importance. The British colonial empire in the USA began with the establishment of the first English settlement in the New World in 1607 in Jamestown and ended in Yorktown with the victory of George Washington over General Charles Cornwallis in the Revolutionary War in 1781 (except for the temporary control of Florida and Hawaii).
On the waterway was during the American Civil War , the Battle of Hampton Roads beaten, which led to the immediate end of the sailing ships as warships.
