According to data from the United States Census Bureau , the metropolitan area extends over an area of 7.1 km² ; of which 7.0 km² land and 0.1 km² water (1.41%).
At the intersection of Interstate 68 and Interstate 70, the Hancock area is only three kilometers wide and is the narrowest point in the state of Maryland; it is also the narrowest part of a state in the USA. The northern limit is determined by the Mason-Dixon Line .
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs through the city, the Western Maryland Rail Trail connects Hancock with Fort Frederick State Park.

According to the 2000 census , Hancock had 1,725 residents, divided between 735 households and 462 families. The population density was 246.43 inhabitants per km².
