Hanna Fedosivna Sobatschko-Shostak (born December 3, July 15  / December 15, 1883 greg. In Skopzi , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 3, 1965 in Cherkisovo , Moscow Oblast , RSFSR ) was a Ukrainian painter of Ukrainian folk decorative painting .

Life

Hanna Sobatschko-Schostak grew up in poor conditions and has been making money with her paintings and embroidery since her early youth. Since 1932 she lived in Cherkisovo north of Moscow, where she designed embroidery patterns for the local cloth factory. Her decorative painting had mostly flora and fauna as motifs and was characterized by its dynamic composition, asymmetry and the use of intense colors. Her works were shown in Sank Petersburg (1913), Kiev (1913, 1919, 1963, 1965) and Moscow (1915, 1927, 1936) as well as in Paris (1913, 1937), Berlin (1914, 1922), Dresden and Munich (1922 , 1924–1925) and New York (1939). A book about her and her work written by H. Miestiechkin was published in Kiev in 1965.

Honors

Hanna Sobatschko-Shostak received the title of Master of Folk Art of the Ukrainian SSR . In 1963 her picture series "Flowers of Ukraine" was exhibited at the Republican Folk Art Exhibition and in 1965 she was nominated for the Taras Shevchenko Prize .
