Hannah Marcus (* around 1970 in New York City ) is an American singer , songwriter and musician .
biography
Hannah Marcus grew up in Spanish Harlem , her father and grandfather Ernst Levy were classical musicians , her mother a painter . After graduating from college , Hannah Marcus traveled to California around 1990 . From 1993 she appeared there as a singer-songwriter appears first on the San Francisco - Compilation Hit me with a flower with her song Demerol . In the dark pathos of their early songs, the critics heard American Gothic overtones , the confessional lyrics of their lyrics reminded some of Nick Drake or Laura Nyro . The German Spex believed it was listening to “ Carly Simon on LSD” in the hymn-like Demerol . On her solo records Demerol ( 1996 ) and River of Darkness (1996), Marcus worked with Mark Kozelek , singer of the indie rock band Red House Painters .
In 1996/97 recordings of the Return to Sender European tour by Chris Cacavas , Louis Tillett and Hannah Marcus were released.
"Voluptuous melancholy soundscapes" heard some critics on Marcus' album Faith Burns of 1998 . Among other things, a Swans bassist provided musical assistance here . One reviewer was reminded of Tim Buckley's amalgamation of folk and jazz, Nico's icy self-reflections, and Patti Smith's delirious stream of consciousness texts.
Hannah Marcus album Black Hole Heaven from 2000 seemed to indulge too much in depressive soul landscapes for some, other listeners wanted to witness "the caresses of shadows in the corners of a forgotten America".
In 2002 the songwriter contributed music to the film Refrigerator Mothers . The work deals with the subject of autism ; Hannah Marcus has an autistic sister herself .
After a long stay in Los Angeles and a broken marriage, Hannah Marcus had moved back to San Francisco, from where she finally returned to her old home in New York after 15 years on the West Coast .
Marcus produced her 2003/04 album Desert Farmers with the help of musicians from the Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor ; she then succeeded in “striking an uncanny balance between metaphysical speculation and manic self-reflection”. Again, music critics were reminded of the early Patti Smith. In addition to her own lyrics, Hannah Marcus now also sings lyrics by the writer Rick Moody ( The Ice Storm and other novels), with whom she also works in the Wingdale Community Singers , supported by David Gubbs ( Red Crayola ) .
