Apfolterer appeared as a soloist all over Europe in his early years and began to compose seriously from the age of twenty. In addition to many useful compositions for everyday military music, he mainly composes military marches in the old Austrian style as well as brass music fantasies.
His best-known work is the Edelweiss March, played by military bands across Europe .
His compositions mainly revolve around Austrian military music, both in a historical sense and with contemporary references. Apfolterer tries to make his works or adaptations as authentic as possible, to come as close as possible to the original. At the Edelweiß concert on April 14, 2007, on the occasion of the anniversary "50 years of Tyrolean military music", he conducted a 107-man wind orchestra, consisting of the military musicians who served at the time and former musicians of the Tyrolean military music.
