Varblane made his debut in Looming in the mid-1980s and presented his first volume of poetry in 1990, for which he was awarded the Estonian Debut Prize. The criticism was very pleased and compared Varblane's poetry with the time poetry of the 1920s in Estonia. His poems are characterized by a slightly melancholy tone, which became even more pronounced in the author's subsequent collections. As a result, the criticism said that these were “more lament than battle songs”. In later reviews, Varblane was increasingly referred to as a representative of the beat generation .
