Hannes Wittmer (* 1986 in Würzburg ), formerly known as Spaceman Spiff , is a German musician and songwriter .

Life

Hannes Wittmer grew up in a village near Würzburg. He began studying sports in Würzburg, which he broke off to move to Hamburg and work there as a concert organizer or for a label. In 2009 his first album Bodenangst was first released by Retter des Rock Records , later reissued by Mairisch Verlag under the pseudonym Spaceman Spiff . The pseudonym is derived from the comic character Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson , who in his daydreams often fantasizes about the role of the spaceman Spiff. In 2010, the split CD was released, You turn your head, I turn the head of Spaceman Spiff together with Finn-Ole Heinrich , on which stories by Heinrich and songs by Spaceman Spiff can be heard. In the same year Spaceman Spiff was awarded the Hamburg Music Prize Krach und Töse . A year later, in 2011, his second solo album was released and still wetter in the window . After a long break, his third album Endlich Nothing was released in 2014 on the Hamburg label Grand Hotel van Cleef . During his live appearances, Spaceman Spiff is often supported by Johnny König on drums, Felix Weigt ( Kid Kopphausen , Die Höchste Eisenbahn ) on bass and Clara Jochum on cello.

In addition to his work as a songwriter, Wittmer also regularly works on other musical projects. For example, in 2012 he recorded the instrumental album Stein Schwere Papier , published an English-language album in 2017 under the name OTAGO with partly electronic influences and regularly composes and plays music for theater pieces. In 2019 he and the cellist Clara Jochum were awarded the Hamburg Theater Prize in the Outstanding Composition & Music category.

In June 2018, Wittmer announced that he would now continue to make music under his real name and has since followed an approach that is critical of consumption and capitalism, which he repeatedly questions and explains in blog articles. His album The Great Spectacle , released in the same year, is not available in stores or on streaming platforms; it can be downloaded for free from his website. At concerts, he does not charge a fixed entry fee and lets the guests decide for themselves what they want to pay.
