Jos Hanniken

Jos (Joseph) Octave Ghislain Hanniken (born May 28, 1912 in Wierde, today in Namur , Belgium , † August 9, 1998 in Oostende ) was a Belgian composer and conductor .

Life

As a 12-year-old he played with his flugelhorn in the wind orchestra of the small Belgian town of Ans . In 1933 he joined the military band of the 9th Line Regiment in Brussels as a musician . At the same time he attended the Music Academy in Anderlecht , where he studied trumpet and harmony . From 1940 to 1945 he studied at the Brussels Conservatory with Marcel Poot and Jean Absil , graduating with honors in the subjects of counterpoint and fugue . In 1949 he was appointed conductor of the Muziekkapel van de Zeemacht in Ostend. He was particularly committed to the performance of works by Belgian composers.

After his retirement he devoted himself to composing works for wind orchestra.
