Hanno Aleksanteri Möttölä (born September 9, 1976 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish basketball player. The 2.09 m tall power forward was the first Finn in the NBA . He has been named Finland's Basketball Player of the Year eight times, more than any other player.

Career

Möttölä played from 1994 to 1996 for Helsingin NMKY in the top division of his home country, the Korisliiga . In 1995/96 in particular, he triumphed and scored 15.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per encounter.

He went to the United States in the NCAA , where Möttölä played from 1996 to 2000 for the University of Utah team , with which he reached the final of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 1998 . In the 1999/2000 season he came to averages of 17 points and 4.8 rebounds per use for Utah. He was then selected and signed by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2000 NBA Draft . He played 155 games for the Hawks in the NBA in two years before returning to Europe. There he was active for as many clubs in six years and reached the final of the ULEB Euroleague with Fortitudo Bologna in 2004 , and in 2006 he won the ULEB Cup with Dynamo Moscow .

Möttölä played 165 games for the Finnish national team between 1995 and 2014, in which he scored 1901 points. At the age of 18, he took part in the European Championship in 1995 , and it wasn't until 16 years later that the team was able to qualify for such a tournament again.

On September 26, 2008 Möttölä announced to end his career in the club and in the national team. On June 4, 2009 Möttölä announced his return to the national team, with which he qualified for a final round of the European basketball championship for the first time after 16 years of abstinence for the men's selection in 2011 . At the 2011 European Championship finals , the selection immediately made it to the round of the twelve best teams and was able to repeat this success two years later when it was once again placed among the ten best European teams at the 2013 European Championship finals . During this tournament Möttölä tore a ligament in his knee early on, on his 37th birthday. Nevertheless, he took part in the 2014 basketball world championship with the national team. As part of this World Cup, Möttölä played his last international match against New Zealand on September 4, 2014 .
