biography

Courtial lost his father at the age of four, and so his mother, a teacher at a village school, raised him and his siblings alone. Courtial was an altar boy and member of the Catholic youth of the diocese , where he became parish youth leader at the age of 16.

In 1965, at the age of 19, he organized a friendship meeting between young Germans and British in Limburg with more than a thousand participants, the first event of its kind in the Federal Republic of Germany . On the occasion of the reception of the British ambassador in Bonn, he met the apostolic nuncio , Archbishop Corrado Bafile , who encouraged him to promote similar events with young Italians .

As a result of this exchange, the idea of organizing more than meetings between young people began. The project was supposed to bring pilgrims to Rome and thus contribute to contacts between peoples and to deepening the faith. In 1969 the company "Courtial Reisen" was founded in Elz near Limburg, which in the first year already counted 2500 bookings on behalf of parishes, church choirs, youth groups, music associations and many others. In the course of time, choirs , church associations, schools and cultural groups came. In 1979 the first office was opened in Rome, in the immediate vicinity of St. Peter's Square : Courtial International . With the establishment of Peter's Way Courtial International Ltd. in New York , he expanded to the American continent in 1986. In addition, there are trips to all Mediterranean countries and especially to the Holy Land , including cruises.

Starting from his work for the liturgy in the Vatican basilica through the establishment of the Pietro Altabella Fund , he took on the task of contacting choirs from all over the world who would like to sing in the solemn mass in St. Peter . Since 1970 he has also regularly organized concerts with important choirs and orchestras as part of the baroque Jesuit church of Sant 'Ignazio in Rome.

In 1996 he decided to found the International Association of Friends of Church Music , today Associazione Internazionale Amici della Fondazione Pro Musica e Arte Sacra , a non-profit association for the promotion and organization of church music concerts, which were becoming increasingly important both in Italy and abroad. In 2002 he founded the “ Fondazione Pro Musica e Arte Sacra ”, which organizes the Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra every year with the participation of the Vienna Philharmonic and other ensembles in order to collect money for the restoration of treasures of sacred art.
