Hans-Eckhard Sommer (* 1961 in Münster ) is a German lawyer , administrative officer and local politician ( CSU ). He has been President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees since June 21, 2018 . Prior to that, he was a ministerial advisor in the function of head of the immigration and asylum law department in the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior .

Life

In 1980, Sommer passed his Abitur at the Schiller Gymnasium in Münster . He then studied law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). During his later activity as a research assistant at the chair for private law and patent law at the Technical University of Munich , he completed his dissertation on the subject of “Failure to fulfill the duty to work. Basic questions about non-performance of work in the service disruption Law of the Civil Code "and received his doctorate in 1996 at the Faculty of Law at LMU to Dr. jur. His doctoral supervisor was Götz Hueck .

Sommer has been a member of the CSU since 1995. As a CSU deputy, he sat in the Munich district committee Milbertshofen-Am Hart between 2002 and 2008 .

He was the office manager of the Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber and personal advisor to the Prime Minister Günther Beckstein . For the CSU he performs the office of auditor .

In the spring of 2015, Sommer applied in a letter to all Ravensburg district councilors for the vacated district office of the district of Ravensburg , which until then had been held by Kurt Widmaier . District parliamentary groups of the CDU and Free Voters had encouraged him to run after a round of introductions. After many years in the civil service, he “found the task of changing sides and taking on local political responsibility very attractive,” he wrote in his application letter. A good week before the election on March 19, 2015, however, Sommer withdrew his application. As an official reason, he stated that he could not simultaneously lead the "currently politically most affected department in the Bavarian State Ministry" and run a candidacy for the district administrator in Ravensburg. Inside the party, however, he had been signaled that his candidacy was hopeless.

Sommer was a member of the ten-person hardship commission in Bavaria.

Since 1996 he has been a lecturer in administrative law at the chair for commercial law and intellectual property at the Technical University of Munich.

After the President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) Jutta Cordt was dismissed on June 15, 2018 due to the so-called " BAMF Affair ", Sommer was appointed BAMF President on June 20, 2018.
