Hans-Erik Staby

Hans-Erik Staby (born September 8, 1935 in Otjimbingwe , South West Africa ; † November 30, 2009 in Windhoek ) was a Namibian architect and politician .

Life

From 1941 to 1949, Staby attended elementary school in Omaruru and then went to Paul-Roos-Gymnasium in Stellenbosch to graduate from high school . In 1959 he finished his architecture studies at the University of Cape Town . He then went on to study at the Technical University of Berlin in 1960 . After a short professional stay as an architect in Kiel , he returned to Namibia in 1963 to devote himself to his profession as an architect. Staby has been working for Stauch & Partners since 1964 , became a partner from 1968 and finally took over the company in 1992. Staby worked closely with Peter Burghard Strack for years .

Since the seventies, Staby devoted himself increasingly to political and cultural engagement in Namibia. From 1980 he was a member of the Republican Party (RP; then part of the Democratic Gym Alliance ) in the South West African Legislative Assembly . In addition, Staby was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia and from 1990 to 1997 spokesman for the DTA for the areas of trade and finance in the National Assembly . In 1997, Staby ended his political career after he realized that those active in politics were only pursuing the realization of their personal goals and were less devoted to the welfare of the general public.

Hans-Erik Staby was also active in civil society as chairman of the Namibia Institute for Democracy and the Namibian-German Foundation for Cultural Cooperation and a member of Transparency International Namibia . He successfully played cricket for the Wanderers Cricket Club and was also President of the Namibia Cricket Board from 1986 to 1999 .

His son Sven-Erik Staby also works as an architect in Namibia (as of November 2019) and is responsible for numerous lodges of the Gondwana Collection Namibia .
