Hans-Hubert Sonntag (born April 16, 1954 ) is a German chess player .

He plays club chess as team captain at the Aachen Chess Club 1856, mainly in the 2nd Bundesliga West and the Oberliga Nordrhein-Westfalen as well as in the 1st Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season . Before that, Sonntag played in the 1st Bundesliga for the last time in the 1995/96 season . In the 1980s he played for the Rhineland-Palatinate SC Kettig , which as a pure amateur club made it to fourth place in the top German division, then for SG Bochum 31 . His youth club was SV Rottweil .

In the Belgian interclubs league he was national champion a total of twelve times. Sonntag took part in the European Club Cup three times , in 1995 with the SK Rochade Eupen-Kelmis , in 2003 in Rethymno for the KSK 47 Eynatten and in 2013 on Rhodes with the Schachfreunde Wirtzfeld . In Luxembourg he played for De Sprénger Echternach and became team champion with them in 2005 , 2006 , 2015 and 2018 .

In 1987 he received the title of FIDE Master and in the same year the title of International Master . He has held the title of FIDE trainer since September 2016 .
