Hans-Hugo Steinhoff

Hans-Hugo Steinhoff (born October 3, 1937 in Fulda ; † April 1, 2004 in Paderborn ) was a German university professor for German language and literature of the Middle Ages with a research focus on Middle High German epics and early New High German prose novels.

Life

Hans-Hugo Steinhoff studied German , Classical Philology and Philosophy in Marburg , Munich and Mainz from 1957 to 1963 . In 1963 he received his doctorate in Marburg with a study on the representation of simultaneous events in the Middle High German epic . In 1964 he passed the First State Philological Examination for teaching at grammar schools. From 1964 to 1969 he was research assistant to Werner Schröder in Marburg , from 1969 to 1974 academic (senior) councilor in Stuttgart and from 1974 to 2003 professor for German language and literature of the Middle Ages at the University of Paderborn, later at the University of Paderborn . From 1976 to 1983 he was Vice-Rector for Research and a member of the Rectorate under Friedrich Buttler and from 1987 to 1999 the Academic Senate. In addition, he was a member of numerous other committees such as the Structural and Budget Commission, the Commission for Young Academics, the Commission for Libraries and the Doctoral and Masters Committee, in some cases for many years and in management positions. From 1987 to 1989 he was a member of the founding board of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute, and later also of the Center for Cultural Studies and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research into the Middle Ages and its Effects (IEMAN) at the University of Paderborn.

Steinhoff's most important publication is the - like other of his publications also - from the German Research Foundation funded (DFG) edition, translation and commentary of the on Old French written prose Lancelot -Gral cycle ( Vulgate Cycle ) in a bilingual edition in five volumes. It was celebrated by Joachim Heinzle as a "philological feat" ( Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of February 2, 2004). In addition, his minimal grammar for working with Middle High German texts , which he wrote with Kurt Gärtner , has received a lot of attention.

Steinhoff was married to Sigrid Steinhoff and had two daughters.
