Life

Hans-Jochen Schneider grew up in Dresden and immediately after graduating from high school in 1942, he did military service with frontline deployment in a mountain troop . In the summer of 1946 he began teaching at the Technical University of Munich with a subject combination of chemistry , biology and geography . In 1948 he switched to the geology diploma course with a focus on mineralogy and geophysics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In his diploma thesis in 1951 he dealt with rock investigations in the limestone Alps in the deposit school of Albert Maucher (1907-1981). In 1953, he received his doctorate with geological investigations in the Upper Wetterstein Limestone of the Bavarian Limestone Alps east of the Loisach. As an assistant at the Institute for Mineral Resources and Applied Geophysics with Hermann Reich , he was able to complete his habilitation in 1957 .

Schneider was an avid mountaineer. Participating in a Himalayan expedition in 1954 did not cause him too much trouble. Here he studied tectonics and magmatism in the northwest of the Karakoram . After a further study trip to the West Himalayas in 1958, he became head of the German Karakoram Expedition in 1959. The scientific tasks of this expedition were structural geology and geophysics as well as the glaciology of the Batura region.

In 1963 he was offered a professorship at the Free University of Berlin , where he was able to set up and set up the chair for applied geology. In 1984 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Schneider was also a consultant for science, maps and trips abroad in the administrative committee of the German Alpine Club .
