Hans-Peter Bärtschi ( February 23, 1950 in WinterthurFebruary 2, 2022 ) was a Swiss architect , author and photographer as well as a historian of technology and economics .

Life

Hans-Peter Bärtschi studied architecture at ETH Zurich , among others with Aldo Rossi , with whom he also wrote his diploma thesis. With his dissertation on "Industrialisation, railway battles and urban planning" he received his PhD from Jean - François Bergier and Paul Hofer . sc. PhD. In Winterthur he founded the office Arias - Architektur Industriearchäologie Stadtentwicklung .

Already during his studies he was committed to the preservation of cultural assets in the structure of architecture. In 1979 he founded "ARIAS-Industriekultur" to enable the documentation and restoration of industrial monuments. At the same time, he curated exhibitions on industrial history in numerous museums, such as a commitment to the former Mühlerama beer brewery since 1981 .

In addition, Bärtschi was the author of numerous publications in the fields of technology, architecture and the history of construction technology, also for radio and television broadcasts. In addition, he took around 350,000 photos of the industrial working world during his working life, which he transferred to the Foundation for Industrial Culture together with Sylvia Bärtschi-Baumann and bequeathed to it. These photos are currently being digitized by the ETH and put online under a free CC license .

The pioneer of "Swiss industrial archeology" grew up, as he himself wrote, "between the Rieter foundry , the locomotive factory and the railway signal box". He fought for the "rescue of witnesses to the great industrial era of Switzerland" and against the one-sided myth of the rural rural idyll.

reception

Numerous publishers for whom Bärtschi published paid tribute to him: “Bärtschi is an industrial erotica. He knows every machine, every process, every material" and "Hans-Peter Bärtschi is obsessed. Coming to terms with the industrial age in Switzerland is his life's work. (...) And he is a walking encyclopedia; a good one that not only names concepts, but also knows connections».
