Hans-Peter Tschorsnig is an entomologist who specializes in caterpillar flies at the Natural History Museum in Stuttgart .

Career

Hans-Peter Tschorsnig studied forest science in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1974 to 1979 and graduated with a degree in forestry. From 1980 he carried out a forest clerkship in Baden-Württemberg and completed it in 1982 as an assessor in the forest service. From 1982 to 1984 he completed a traineeship at the State Museum for Natural History in Stuttgart. In 1985 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on " Taxonomy of parasites important for forestry : Investigations on the structure of the male post- abdomen of caterpillar flies ( Diptera , Tachinidae )".

From 1985 to 1989 he was employed on temporary contracts at the State Museum for Natural History in Stuttgart. He has been working there as a conservator since 1989. Since January 2003 he has been editor of the "Stuttgart Contributions to Natural History A (Biology)". He made Swabians smile with his scientific measurement of the aedeagus of the housefly , on the basis of which the smallest Swabian unit of length, the Muggeseggele , is equated with an average of 0.22 millimeters.

activity

Caterpillar flies reproduce parasitically in larvae, pupae or imagines of other insects and thus play a role in biological pest control. Tschorsnig is currently compiling a catalog of hosts for the Palearctic caterpillar flies . He collects original data on the faunistics and ecology of European Tachinidae, based on various projects, to analyze the way of life of the individual species. Together with Joachim Ziegler from the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin , he records caterpillar flies from selected regions of Europe, especially on the Iberian Peninsula , in the Stilfserjoch National Park ( Italy ), in the Hautes-Alpes ( France ) and in the Mercantour National Park (France / Italy).

Taxa

He is the first person to describe and scientifically named recent insects several times . The following taxa were first described by Hans-Peter Tschorsnig :
