Hans Bosshard (born October 7, 1935 in Aarau ) is a Swiss journalist , editor and historian .

Hans Bosshard grew up in Amriswil , Canton Thurgau . After finishing school, he studied English, German and history at the University of Zurich , where he received his PhD in 1963. phil. I did my doctorate and then obtained the high school teacher license of the Canton of Zurich. He lives in Kilchberg ZH , is married to Brigitte Wartenweiler and has two daughters.

During his studies he lived for a year as part of an exchange program between the Universities of Zurich and Aberdeen in Scotland. Back in Zurich, he worked alongside his studies as a freelance journalist and as an editor at two news agencies and took over as an English and German teacher at various secondary schools.

After graduating, Hans Bosshard turned completely to journalism. He got his first permanent position at the foreign editorial office of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).

In 1964 he received a scholarship from the American media organization World Press Institute . This independent foundation allowed 15 journalists from around the world to spend a year in America. This enabled Bosshard to experience the American presidential election of 1964 in direct contact with leading politicians in the country. He spent days with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy , Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, and Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater .

As part of the World Press Institute program, Bosshard was given the opportunity to do a three-month internship at the then widely distributed and respected Boston newspaper Christian Science Monitor, just as Martin Luther King saw massive crowds of demonstrators marching through the Boston City led and made a fiery speech. In recognition of his work in Boston, the editor-in-chief of Monitor Bosshard arranged a personal invitation to the White House at the moment when President Lyndon B. Johnson was signing the Manpower and Development Act 1965, an essential part of his "War on Poverty". During a trip through the south of the country, Bosshard conducted interviews with Martin Luther King as well as with his southern opponents, above all Governor George C. Wallace of Alabama.

Back in Switzerland, Bosshard took over the position of foreign editor of the Zürichsee-Zeitung in 1965 , and then worked for thirty years as editor-in-chief of the two Swiss editions of Reader's Digest , Das Beste (German-speaking) and Sélection (French).

Non-professional activities

From 1971 to 1973 Hans Bosshard was President of the Zurich Press Association, then for seven years he was a member of the Cantonal Commission for the Journalism Institute of the University of Zurich . From 1977 he headed the information and communication section of the Swiss UNESCO Commission for four years . He then worked on the school commission of the Kilchberg community. From 1955 to 1990 he did regular military service in the Swiss Army, most recently as a major in the army staff.

During all his years as an editor, Hans Bosshard placed great emphasis on regularly writing and publishing his own contributions. His favorite subjects included environmental protection, democracy, racial issues and international politics. The article entitled “The Platzspitz - Zurich's Schandfleck”, published in May 1991 in “Das Beste” and “Sélection” under the pseudonym René Guyer, achieved the greatest attention and impact. Under the title "Zurich's Needle Park " it appeared in October 1991 with a circulation of 15 million copies in the American edition of Reader's Digest.
