Life

Hans Dorn was a son of the Kirchheim painter of the same name. In 1576/77 he was still a journeyman in Kirchheim. In the same year he moved to Stuttgart, where he also worked as Hans Steiner's journeyman the following year, 1577/78. Since 1580 he has been shown to have received orders from Duke Ludwig von Württemberg . In 1580/81 he painted a pasture and a tournament in Böblingen for him on paper . In 1581/82 he renovated an "ancient Teckische sepultur [grave place] at Owen " for 6 fl .

Dorn had a reputation at the Württemberg court. That's why he already took part in the development phase of the painting of the new pleasure house . Privy Councilor Dr. Georg Gadner , who was commissioned to work out the concept for the painting of the 1196 m² and 14 m high ballroom, discussed the Duke's idea of a topographical overview map of Württemberg with the Duke's most important pleasure hunts in mid-1587 as well as the portraits of the participants in the hunt. When the realization began in 1590, Hans Dorn belonged from the beginning to the group of painters who were to do this under the direction of Hans Steiner. Dorn should first take over the Böblingen and Nagold forests and, with the participation of his journeyman Gabriel Dachs, carry them out according to Gadner's parchment drafts. Soon the Leonberger Forst was added, which Gabriel Dachs was originally supposed to carry out alone, and the Tübingen Forest, for which Jacob Züberlin was originally intended. For the last picture, Dorn made a preliminary drawing in the Balingen area , according to which Gabriel Dachs was supposed to carry out the scene under his supervision. Due to his experience in painting the hunting scenes, Dorn, along with Steiner, was obliged to advise other painters. Nevertheless, he had to take part in a bear hunt near Nagold and - together with Andreas Herneisen - in a pig hunt near Leonberg.

Hohentwiel Fortress , watercolor 1588

Hans Dorn was a particularly skilled painter of hunting scenes and depictions of rare game animals or hunting booty - pictures that Duke Ludwig asked him to do. In 1591/92 he received 25 florins for an oil painting on linen depicting a wild boar hunt in the Leonberg Forest. His tasks also included topographical representations of the border disputes, documents from 1588/89 and 1592/93 are mentioned.

Hans Dorn lived in St. Lienhards Vorstadt from 1589 until his death . He died - still quite young - while working on the organ work in the court chapel. This interrupted work had to be completed by his journeyman Hans Paur. His widow, Lucretia Dorn, married the Tübingen painter Georg Baur in 1594 .

meaning

Dorn was valued by Georg Gadner, but Hans Steiner also had a very positive opinion of his art of painting: “His works are flawless, he is a better painter than Herneisen, especially in the pasture, and he would have done better with Dorn alone without him Come here to work ”.

Dorn was not a court painter, but was closely associated with the court. It is not known whether he worked for other clients. Only two works have survived, the author of which was certainly Dorn. One of them is the watercolor drawing depicting a bird hunt. It shows an accurate, detailed description of the action in a picture-book-like composition with doll-like figures. “The sheet is clearly dependent on Steiner, but differs from him in the detailed execution or the schematic facial drawings. The most free is the sketchy, suggestive writing of the forest, in which there was no compulsion to make informative statements. ”His image of the Hohentwiel fortress from 1588, which was created on the occasion of a landslide, has also been preserved. This picture is the oldest realistic representation of Hohentwiel.
