Hans Feddersen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Feddersen (born October 17, 1949 in Ahrensburg ; † July 15, 2013 in Windhoek ) was a German-speaking Namibian journalist and editor-in-chief of the Allgemeine Zeitung .

Life

Feddersen was born in Germany and immigrated with his parents to the South West African Karibib in 1953 . After attending school, Feddersen studied German and mathematics at the Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit in Johannesburg . In 1974 he started teaching in Otjiwarongo . In 1976 he switched to the German school in Karibib, where he also taught at what was then the home care seminar.

In December 1980 Feddersen left the school service and joined the editorial team of the Windhoeker Allgemeine Zeitung. In April of the following year, the then publisher, Diether Lauenstein , appointed him editor-in-chief. He held this position until Dirk Mudge took over the newspaper in 1995. Feddersen resigned because he considered it incompatible to publish a German-language newspaper in an Afrikaans-language publisher. In May 1995 he founded the free weekly advertising paper "PLUS", which appeared mainly in German, but also contained articles in English and Afrikaans; Feddersen also worked here as editor-in-chief. The paper was in financial difficulties from the start and therefore had to be discontinued in 2007. Feddersen's attempt to establish a follow-up publication with the Plus magazine also failed after a short time.

Feddersen was not without controversy as a journalist. He was regarded as “politically more right-wing”. His newspaper “PLUS” published an advertisement in 2005 in which “joy and satisfaction” about the death of Simon Wiesenthal were expressed. Feddersen later apologized for this. A full-page obituary notice for Rudolf Hess had already caused a sensation at the end of the 1980s, when Feddersen was responsible as editor-in-chief there .

Most recently, Feddersen worked as a consultant for the Hanns Seidel Foundation and held seminars on political education.

From 1978 to 1980, Feddersen was secretary of the German-speaking Southwestern interest group. He was also a member of the Karibib City Council for a while . In addition, he performed numerous voluntary functions and was involved as a handicraft speaker in the Windhoek Carnival .

Feddersen's grave is in Omaruru .

Private

Feddersen had been married to Silvelyn Feddersen since 1977 and had four children.
