Hans Frädrich

Hans Frädrich (born July 4, 1937 in Göttingen ; † September 13, 2003 in Berlin ) was a German zoologist and zoo director.

Life

Hans Frädrich was born on July 4, 1937 as the son of the surgeon Günter Frädrich in Göttingen. He studied in Göttingen, Munich and Toulouse the subjects biology and Romance . In Munich he heard lectures from Konrad Lorenz , which strengthened his desire to become a zoo gardener. After Richard Faust and Bernhard Grzimek his studies in Frankfurt's zoo and in the wild in Kenya had allowed his doctorate Frädrich 1964 with his dissertation On the biology and ethology of the wart hog in mind the behavior of other Suiden Dr. rer. nat. After completing student internships at the Tierhandelshaus Ruhe, the former operator of the Hanover Zoo , and observing warthogs at the Münster Zoo, his animal horticultural career began as a volunteer assistant at the Frankfurt Zoo on January 1, 1964. Two years later he started planning a branch of the Frankfurt Zoo in the Taunus commissioned, but moved to the Berlin Zoo that same year . There he became senior scientific assistant in 1972, authorized signatory in 1974, deputy member of the board in 1975, full board member in 1986 and finally chairman of the board and director of the Berlin zoo and its aquarium from September 1, 1991 to July 4, 2002. He had been a member of the Monday Club since 2000 . Hans Frädrich was a particularly amiable person: knowledgeable and hardworking, at the same time modest and reserved as well as factual and fair. He died after a long illness on September 13, 2003 in Berlin. Hundreds of people attended the funeral service in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

Services

During Frädrich's directorate, the Berlin zoo experienced numerous successful renovations and new buildings. The hippopotamus house, the Siamese cattle house and the penguin house are particularly noteworthy. But also from the second row he had a significant influence on the development of the Berlin zoo. The extension of the Berlin zoo to the exemplary designed extension area is mainly attributed to his negotiating skills.

The natural research owes Hans Frädrich significant contributions to the behavioral biology of wild pigs. He was also secretary of the German Society for Mammal Studies for many years, and from 1977 to 2002 he was the co-editor of the Berlin Zoo's Bongo magazine .
