Hans Goedicke

Hans G. Goedicke (born August 7, 1926 in Vienna , † February 24, 2015 in Towson , Maryland ) was an Austrian Egyptologist .

Life

After his military service, Hans Goedicke studied at the University of Vienna from 1945 , where he received his doctorate in 1949. From 1949 to 1951 he worked as an assistant at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna before going to the United States . From 1952 to 1957 he was an assistant at Brown University , then he worked for UNESCO at the Abu Simbel Temple for a year . In 1958/59 he worked as an assistant at the University of Göttingen and taught Egyptology at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore from 1960 , first as a lecturer, from 1962 as assistant professor, from 1966 as associate professor and from 1968 as full professor. From 1968 to 1973 and 1979 to 1984 he headed the Department of Near Eastern Studies there.

Hans Goedicke was mainly active in the fields of the Egyptian language and epigraphy, especially for the time of the Old Kingdom , but also carried out archaeological projects in Egypt, such as an epigraphic survey in Aswan , Gharb Aswan and Gebel Tingar (1964, 1967), excavations in the necropolis of Giza (1972, 1974) and a survey in Wadi Tumilat (1977, 1978, 1981).
