Hans-Joachim Klimkeit

Hans-Joachim Klimkeit (* July 22, 1939 in Ranchi , India ; † February 7, 1999 ) was a comparative religious scholar .

Hans Joachim Klimkeit came from a missionary family. His father Johannes Klimkeit worked for the Gossner Mission in India. He passed the Abitur at the Söderblom-Gymnasium in Espelkamp . He then studied Protestant theology, mathematics, Indology (especially with Helmuth von Glasenapp ) and comparative religious studies in Neuendettelsau , Tübingen, Bonn and Harvard . He did his doctorate and habilitation under Gustav Mensching in Bonn and in 1972, as the successor to this most important Rudolf Otto student, he became Professor of Comparative Religious Studies at the University of Bonn . He also became director of the Bonn seminar for comparative religious studies. In 1978 he became co-editor of the ZRGG, 1987 co-editor of the TRE. As a result of a serious illness, he died on February 7, 1999, leaving behind three sons: Dirk, Bernd and Kai.

His main research areas in religious studies were Eastern Manichaeism , Buddhism , Gnosis and problem-oriented religious phenomenology .
