Hans Lippold

Hans Lippold (born November 25, 1932 in Drognitz , Saalfeld district , † July 7, 1980 in Jena ) was a German botanist and geographic researcher. He was curator at the Haussknecht Herbarium at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena .

life and work

Hans Lippold was born the sixth of seven children of the postman Willy Lippold and his wife Helene. From 1939 to 1947 he attended eight-grade elementary school and then began an apprenticeship as a gardener in Kahla , now in the GDR . In 1950 he found his first job as a gardener in the botanical garden in Jena , where he joined a group of young, botanically interested colleagues. Together with them and with students and botanists, he went on excursions throughout the entire Eastern Bloc that was accessible to him at the time . Other important expeditions took him to Central America and Cuba .

While he was still working on the maple monograph, he moved from the Botanical Garden to the Haussknecht Herbarium in 1964 , where he initially became a research assistant, research assistant and finally curator. For the Haussknecht herbarium, he has compiled an extensive plant collection comprising 2,500,000 numbers, as well as a highly regarded specialist library. After his death in 1982, the university also took over Lippold's private library.

Other parts of his collection are in the Jardín botánico Nacional de Cuba in Havana . His botanical author abbreviation is " Lippold ".

In 1968 he was with the work of the maple species from the section: Platanoidea PAX in Europe and the Middle East in Jena doctorate . Lippold was married and the marriage had three children.
