From 1986 to 1993 he was Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Auckland (New Zealand). After completing a second doctorate (1993 Doctor of Engineering at the University of Auckland), Müller-Steinhagen worked until 2000 as a professor and institute director at the Institute for Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Surrey (England). In the meantime , he completed his habilitation in 1999 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . From 2000 to 2010, Müller-Steinhagen was director of the Institute for Technical Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center and the Institute for Thermodynamics and Thermal Technology at the University of Stuttgart . He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) .

After Müller-Steinhagen prevailed over two competitors in the election as rector of the TU Dresden, he held this office from August 18, 2010. On May 13, 2015, he was elected for a second term.
