Political career

In 1985 Mangold joined the ödp. In the following period he was elected to the federal executive committee of the party, at the federal party congress in January 1988 as the first deputy federal chairman. However, during this time he came into conflict with the then party chairman Herbert Gruhl . In addition, Gruhl made mood against him and three other board members in the party newspaper , which also intensified the conflict. At the meeting of the Federal Main Committee (BHA), which took place on January 7, 1989 in Würzburg, Mangold suggested a reconciliation talk, but the latter refused.

In the run-up to the fateful Saarbrücken federal party conference of the ÖDP in 1989, Mangold announced his withdrawal from the federal executive board; ironically, Gruhl also resigned from his post during the party congress. In 1990 Mangold was elected to the city council of Kempten (Allgäu) , of which he has been a member since then.

In 1995, Mangold replaced Bernd Richter as party chairman in a fight vote . After criticizing his leadership style, he lost this position in 1997 in a vote to Susanne Bachmaier . Under the chairmanship of Mangold, the corporate identity process of the ödp began, which led to a new party logo and the lower case of the party name. The latter was revised in 2010.

In the course of the legislative period from 2002 to 2008 he joined Alliance 90 / The Greens . In addition, Mangold is a member of the Bund Naturschutz and the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Ecology and Democracy .
