from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Paulsen (born May 20, 1922 in Hamburg ) is a German chemist. He was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Hamburg and deals with the chemistry of carbohydrates .

After work, military and war service and a serious illness, Paulsen studied chemistry. He completed his studies in 1953, received his doctorate in 1955 under Kurt Heyns in Hamburg and completed his habilitation there in 1962. He then was a private lecturer in Hamburg, became a university professor there in 1968 and held the chair for natural product chemistry in Hamburg from 1972 until his retirement in 1987.

In carbohydrate chemistry, he dealt with, among other things, catalytic oxidation of myo- inositol and configuration and conformational selectivities in platinum-catalyzed oxidation, carbohydrates with nitrogen in the hemiacetal ring , nitrogen- containing monosaccharides and hydrazino and azido derivatives. He also dealt with acyl - oxonium rearrangements of carbohydrates and especially rearrangement of D - glucose into D - idose and of cyclopentane pentol. More recently he has been working on the synthesis of complex oligosaccharides and biologically active glycoproteins . He published over 470 scientific papers.

In 1980 he received the Emil Fischer Medal , 1983 the Haworth Memorial Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry , 1985 the Claude S. Hudson Award of the American Chemical Society , 1989 the Heyrovský Medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences, 1992 the Paul Karrer Medal , the Bijvoet Medal in 1993 and the RIKEN Eminent Scientist Award in 1996 . In 1986 he became a member of the Jungius Society . For many years he was one of the main reviewers at the German Research Foundation (DFG).
