Hans Rudolf Pomtow (born March 27, 1859 in Berlin ; † March 24, 1925 there ) was a German classical philologist , epigraphist and high school teacher. He is one of the most important early explorers of Delphi .

Life

After occasionally attending the Joachimsthal Gymnasium in Berlin, he passed the Abitur examination at the Latin secondary school in Halle in 1877 . He then studied Classical Philology at the University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate on July 18, 1881 with the thesis De oraculis quae exstant Graecis trimetro iambico compositis . On May 23, 1882, he passed the state examination for high school service and served his probationary year in school service from August 1882 to September 1883 at the learned school of the Johanneum in Hamburg.

Since 1884 he occupied himself with the exploration of the ancient Delphi. In July 1887 he was commissioned by the Prussian Academy of Sciences with the publication of the Delphic inscriptions for the Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum and spent long stays in Delphi to collect the material and also carried out excavations there. The practically completed work could not be printed, however, because after the beginning of the French excavations in Delphi in 1892 the French insisted on the publication of the inscriptions and the plan was therefore postponed in November 1899 at the request of the Parisian Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres . As a result, Pomtow had to return to school. Since Easter 1900 he worked as a teacher in Berlin, first at the Royal Wilhelms-Gymnasium , and from 1901 at the Luisengymnasium . In 1906 he was appointed professor .

In addition to his work as a teacher, Pomtow continued to deal with the history, inscriptions and monuments of Delphi and published numerous papers on it, the summary of his studies on the topography of Delphi can be found in his contribution to the Realencyclopedia of Classical Antiquity from 1924.

Pomtow died of a heart condition shortly before the age of 65. He bequeathed his collection of inscriptions to his friend Günther Klaffenbach , who gave them to the Prussian Academy of Sciences.
