Hans Quecke (Coptologist)

Hans Quecke SJ (born July 31, 1928 in Duisburg , † March 5, 1998 in Münster ) was a German Jesuit , Coptologist and liturgical scholar .

Life

The son of a family of high officials began studying Catholic theology after graduating from high school in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1947 , entered the Jesuit order in 1949 , and graduated from the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main with a Lic. theol. from. From 1958 to 1960 he studied Christian Oriental Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven , 1960–63 and 1964–65 Egyptology at the University of Heidelberg . In 1957 he was ordained a priest .

From 1965 to 1997 Quecke worked as the successor to Jean Simon SJ at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, teaching mainly Coptic , as well as Armenian and Georgian . He served biblical studies with the exemplary edition of three Gospels of the Coptic New Testament in the Sahid dialect based on manuscripts from the fifth and later centuries.

In search of an uncrowded Coptic field of work, he turned to the Coptic liturgy . With investigations into the Coptic liturgy of the hours he was in 1970 in Leuven for Dr. PhD in Oriental Philology and History . In the following years he created important first and new editions of Coptic-Sahidan anaphores , as well as investigations and editions of liturgical chant texts from Christian Egypt.

In 1996 Quecke was elected Honorary President of the International Association for Coptic Studies .

His Roman colleague Tito Orlandi paid tribute to him in his obituary: "Severe in his judgments, but always friendly and encouriging, Hans Quecke leaves a void in coptology not easy to fill, and a heritage which time will not cancel".

He spent his last years in Haus Sentmaring in Münster.
