Life

Johann Baptist August (nickname "Hans") Rommel was born in Hausen ob Urspring as the son of the local school teacher Johann Paul Rommel and his wife Maria Anna Dachser. The parents married in Hausen oU on November 29, 1888. Hans Rommel's paternal grandfather, Johann Baptist Rommel, was Baron von Freybergscher Revierjäger in Allmendingen; the maternal grandfather Johann Georg Dachser was Baron Freyberg's economic overseer in Haldenwang, Bavaria. The family originally came from the Großer Lautertal (hunters on the Schülzburg ). Besides Hans Rommel, the brother Franz August (* 1891) and the sister Paula (* 1892) were born in Hausen oU .

Rommel attended elementary school in Hausen oU, where his father had to teach all seven school classes in one classroom. When he was 6 to 7 years old, his father was transferred to Hürbel . Prepared through private tuition, he was able to transfer to the grammar school in Ehingen and attend school there until he passed the state exam . He then moved to the Ehinger Konvikt , and from there in 1910 to the Tübingen Wilhelmsstift to study at the University of Tübingen . There he studied ancient languages and history, also spent a semester at the University of Berlin and returned to Tübingen in 1912. Rommel reported as a war volunteer and was discharged from military service at the end of 1918 after various deployments. It was not until 1918 that he was able to take his first service examination after a break of several years. He immediately began completing his dissertation and received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1921 with a thesis on the scientific-paradoxographic excursions under Philostratos , Heliodoros and Achilleus Tatios .

After completing his studies, Rommel was initially an assistant teacher in Rottenburg am Neckar . This was followed in 1920 by his appointment as a teacher in Freudenstadt at the secondary school there with a newly integrated Latin department, in which city he also settled at home. In 1929, the Realschule was expanded to become a full-service facility called "Realgymnasium und Oberrealschule". When the new building of the high school, the “Keplerschule”, was inaugurated in 1930, Rommel wrote the commemorative publication “The new building of the Realgymnasium and Oberrealschule in Freudenstadt”. His subjects were mainly ancient languages (Latin) and history.

In the 1930s, Rommel began to dedicate himself to the history of his new home Freudenstadt and the surrounding area. It was he who took the initiative in 1936 to found the “Freudenstädter Heimatblätter”. The publication of a historical magazine for a city the size of Freudenstadt was a rarity. As publisher and editor of the papers, Rommel drew from its foundation in 1936 until his death in 1979. In addition, he was the author of several dozen articles in the magazine, many of which were not even signed by his name. In addition, Rommel wrote several other independently published publications on the history of Freudenstadt.

Until now, Freudenstadt did not have an independent city archive until Rommel was commissioned by then mayor Ernst Blaicher in 1937 to set up a city archive. The expansion of the city museum was also important to him. Rommel was then also appointed archivist and curator for the entire Freudenstadt district.

The Second World War, in which he was still used as a reserve officer, then ruined much of his work. While large parts of the city archive could be saved by being stored in bunkers, extensive and valuable archival material such as B. the inventories and divisions, the church registers and the Black Forest newspaper "Der Grenzer" (later the Black Forest messenger). The city museum was also opened on the night of 16./17. April 1945 destroyed by bombs and artillery fire. After the war, the archive and museum had to be painstakingly rebuilt. In 1955, Rommel retired when he reached retirement age. Rommel died in Freudenstadt on May 24, 1979.
